An unusual bearded portrait of Constantine I
Lot 5467
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Silvered bronze, 21 mm, 5.73 g, 6 h), Nicomedia, 312. IMP C FL VAL CONSTANTINVS P F AVG Laureate head of Constantine I to right. Rev. VIRTVTI E-XERCITVS / ✱ / Δ / SMN Virtus advancing right, holding trophy over his left shoulder, round shield in his left hand and dragging bound captive with his right. RIC 78c var. (unlisted officina). Somewhat rough and with minor traces of cleaning, otherwise, good very fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

Curiously, though Constantine I was most likely clean shaven for most or all of his life, here he is portrayed with sideburns and a small moustache.
